there's 3 problems with ginko trees... well first of all, the leaves get everywhere! their bifurcated lobes mean they can 'fly' or 'float' for long distances on light winds. so in the Fall when they turn golden butter yellow... the leaves fall sometimes in one day off the whole tree... or can take upwards of 15 days for a tree to shed all its leaves.

the second problem? oh you'll love this one! gingko reproduce sexually. there's a pollen producing male and females don't produce pollen at all. the seeds from the female trees are small and look and feel like a fruit. with a hard-ish but fleshy outside. this flesh contains butyric acid (also known as butanoic acid) and smells like rancid butter or vomit when the seeds have fallen on the ground. when they split the seeds stink especially bad. also, when that fleshy fruit starts to rot the stench can physically soak into the soil around the trees... turning even a few dozen female gingko trees into a nasal assault of near tear-gas or skunk-spray levels. that's why most decorative plantings of gingko are male only. but this also brings about the third problem.

human allergies. gingko have allergenic pollen. the males produce prolific amounts of pollen for upwards of 3 months in the Spring. this could be due to the females being air-pollinated only. no known insect or animal naturally pollinates gingko trees. the whole tree has an OPALS (Ogren Plant Allergy Scale) rating of 7 (out of 10). also, the fruit outside the seeds, leaves (living ones, the golden yellow dead ones in Fall are barely reactive to humans), and fleshy soft layer under the outer bark are VERY reactive with humans. they contain the same substances found in poison oak, ivy, and sumac.

if you encounter a grove of female gingko and wish to clean up the seeds, don't touch them with your bare hands! use disposable latex/nitrile gloves or cloth gloves that you can easily store in a large plastic/paper bag. later, wash the gloves furiously in scalding hot water and detergents. the allergens from the seeds etc. are not as persistent as poison ivy or oak but it is mildly transferrable. also, if you plan on 'lawn vacuuming' up the seeds, do NOT mulch or grind them up! the stench will be horrendous and the allergens from the seeds' flesh can become airborne when atomized during the mulching process.
